About
Artist-in-Residence -yu- is an artist-in-residence program held in Matsuyama City, a castle town that has developed around Matsuyama Castle, a traditional hot spring resort famous for Dogo Hot Springs, and the largest population in the Shikoku area.
The program at AIR-yu is an opportunity for artists from Japan and abroad to experience and be inspired by Matsuyama City, the “International City of Tourism, Hot Springs and Culture”, and at the same time, to meet a variety of artists and their works in the community centering on the AIR-yu apartment.
Residencies can be 4, 8, or 12 weeks in length, and participating artists are required to present a performance or exhibition at -yu-'s gallery or at one of our partner venues.(We will support you in providing locations, collaborating with local artists, etc., whenever possible.) There are no restrictions on the field of expertise. Artist-in-residence programs are available at any time.
Gallery & Accommodation
AIR Yu provides artists-in-residence with:
- Accommodation (up to 3 people per room)
- Bicycles for easy transportation
- A workshop & gallery for creative activities
Accommodation Details:
Artists can stay in one of two locations:
- Room 205 (Yudo-cho Apartment) – Located within the same building as the workshop & gallery.
- Room 705 (Kemi Building) – Situated in downtown Matsuyama.
Each room is independent and private, meaning you will not share a kitchen, toilet, or bath with other residents.
Amenities & Nearby Facilities:
- WiFi available in all rooms.
- Dogo Onsen bathing facilities within a short bicycle ride.
- Supermarkets & convenience stores are just a short distance away.

Who runs AIR Yu?
AIR Yu is operated by OYU Inc. (Organize Your Unique), a team led by Mineo Kawasaki—a drummer, composer, and music event organizer performing both in Japan and internationally.
What’s in the neighborhood?
AIR Yu is located in central Matsuyama City, just 10 minutes by bicycle from Dogo Onsen. Nearby, you’ll find:
- Ishide-ji Temple & Shigeta-ji Temple, part of the 88-temple pilgrimage.
- A 7-Eleven supermarket, just 5 minutes on foot.
What kind of building is it?
AIR Yu is part of an apartment complex built 43 years ago, situated beside Ishite River. The building is home to a diverse community, including writers, coffee roasters, freelance PR professionals, musicians, and more.
